Michiel Hillen van Hoochstraten or Michel Hillenius (Hoogstraten, c. 1476, – Antwerp, 22 July 1558), was a Flemish printer, publisher, bookseller and bookbinder. His printing press put out publications in a wide range of genres, including imperial ordinances, almanacs, devotional literature, anthologies of customs, textbooks, etc. He also printed humanistic writings by Erasmus, Adrianus Barlandus and Jacobus Latomus as well as the first Dutch-language version of the story of Till Eulenspiegel. His multiple editions of the Bible in Dutch translation were among the first to be published. Michiel Hillen van Hoochstraten is regarded as the most important publisher active in Antwerp in the first half of the sixteenth century. wikipedia

John of Westphalia, also known as John of Paderborn, Johann von Westphalen and other spelling variations of Johannes, Paderborn and Westfalia (died 1498), was the first printer in Leuven and possibly in Flanders. He was born in Paderborn or Aachen and seems to have been first active in Venice, but returned to Germany and studied at the university of Cologne before moving to Flanders as a printer. He was active from 1473 in Aalst, working together with Dirk Martens on four books, and from 1474 in Leuven. He worked there in the university until 1498, producing at least 180 books. On his death in 1498, Dirk Martens bought his shop and settled in Leuven. John's brother Conrad of Westphalia was also a printer. wikipedia

Johann Veldener (born in Würzburg, died in Leuven between 1486 and 1496), also known as Jan Veldener or Johan Veldenaer; was an early printer in Flanders. He worked as a punchcutter and printer in Cologne, together with William Caxton, who may have financed his first books. They both left for Flanders in 1472. Evidence indicates that Veldener assisted Caxton in setting up his printing office in Bruges and helped printing his first work there, the 1472-1473 Recuyell of the Historyes of Troye by Raoul Lefèvre. Afterwards, Veldener went to Leuven and set up his printing company there, becoming the second printer in Leuven after John of Westphalia, and the third or fourth in the Netherlands. He entered the Leuven University on 30 July 1473 in the faculty of Medicine. He left Leuven in 1477, after the death of Charles the Bold caused unrest in the city, and went to Utrecht. When that city also became troubled, he left for Culemborg, and finally returned to Leuven in 1484.Veldener was also known for creating typefaces, both for his own work and for others, and Caxton is believed to have taken one of Veldener's typefaces with him to England and used it among others on his first edition of the Canterbury Tales. It is probable that he later bought a number of other typefaces from Veldener as well. While in Utrecht, Veldener also supposedly wrote a Chronyck van Hollandt, Zeelandt, ende Westvrieslandt (a Chronicle of Holland, Sealand, and Western Friesland), which was reprinted in 1650 in Utrecht. Other works attributed to him are the Cronijcken van Enghelant (a chronicle of the English kings until 1460), Cronijcken van Utrecht (a history of the Bishopric of Utrecht), Cronijcken van Gelre, Cronijcken van Cleve and the Cronijcken van Brabant. Currently it is believed that these works were anonymous and printed by him, and that the later attributions to him as writer are erroneous. wikipedia

Arend de Keysere (Arnoldus cesaris, Arnoul de Keysere) ( ? - Ghent, 1490) was a Flemish masterprinter of incunabula. De Keysere, who very probably was trained as a printer in France, started printing in Oudenaarde in 1480. Shortly afterwards, in 1483, he established himself as a printer in Ghent where he stayed until his death in 1490. De Keyser edited 33 publications : 13 letters of indulgence, 9 theological works and 5 official publications; 23 of them were in Latin, 8 in Dutch and 3 in French. Two of them have remarkable woodcuts. wikipedia

Gerard or Gheraert Leeu, Leew, Lyon, or Leonis, (between 1445 and 1450, Gouda - 1492, Antwerp) was a Dutch printer of incunabula.Leeu printed his first (liturgical) book in May 1477 in his shop in Gouda, where between 1477 and 1484 he produced a total of about 69 books. In 1484 he moved to Antwerp, where he died in 1492 from a stab wound during a quarrel with one of his typesetters.Besides printing works in Latin and Dutch, he reprinted some of William Caxton's editions for the English market. These were The History of Jason, The History of Paris and Vienne and The Chronicles of England. He published the Dialogus creaturarum in a number of editions, the first being in 1480. He also printed a Latin version of the Solomon and Marcolf legend, entitled Collationes quod dicuntur fecisse mutuo rex Solomon ... et Marcolphus in 1488, which he followed in 1492 with an English translation, This is the dyalogus or communyng betw[i]xt the wyse King Solomon and Marcolphus. It is not clear whether the English translation was done out of Dutch or Latin, but it is likely that Leeu had the translation made in his own shop from the earlier Latin edition. wikipedia

Martin Morin was a French printer of incunables, active in Rouen between about 1490 and 1518. It has been suggested that he was born in or near Orbec around 1450, and died in Rouen around 1522. He learned the trade in the Rhine region where he was sent by the Rouen family Lallemant together with Pierre Maufer, and then became a printer and bookseller in Rouen. His 1492 Breviarium Saresberiense or Breviarium Sarum, a breviary for Salisbury, is said to be "the first recorded liturgical book printed for the English market".The Incunabula Short Title Catalogue of the British Library lists 34 works. Other works are listed in the Manuel du bibliographe normand: ou, Dictionnaire bibliographique ..., Volume 2 by Édouard Frère. wikipedia

Willem Vorsterman (died 1543) was an early printer of books, active in Antwerp between 1504 and 1543. He published about 400 books in Dutch, Spanish, English, Latin, French and Danish, making him the second most productive printer in the Netherlands in the first half of the 16th century, behind Hillenius. His earliest production, between 1500 and 1520, consisted mainly of works of fiction in Dutch often in chapbook format, while he later expanded into other languages and genres, with more luxurious, illustrated editions. He entered the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1512 and was its dean in 1527 and 1542. His shop was in the "Golden Unicorn", near the Kammerpoort in Antwerp. wikipedia

Jan van Doesborch (c. 1470/80 – Utrecht, 1536), also known as Jan van Doesborgh, John of Doesborch or John of Doesborowe, was a Dutch author, bookseller, printer, engraver, publisher and translator. During the course of his career as a printer and bookseller during the period roughly between 1502 and 1532, he published at least sixty books in various genres, including works of prose fiction, jest books, medieval legend, practical handbooks, and colonial travelogues. These books were mainly printed in either Dutch or English.Jan van Doesborch's life is poorly documented. No archives have been preserved from the fifteenth century, with the result that we do not know when or where he was born, from what class or milieu he came, what his marital status was, or what education he received. Presumably he learned the printing profession from the Antwerp printer Roland vanden Dorpe, whose company and inventory he took over from his widow around 1501 or 1502 after his death. Traditionally, his year of birth is estimated circa 1470, but around 1480 is equally possible. In any case, he mastered English and French well enough to be able to translate into and out of those languages. He likely had some knowledge of Latin and possibly Greek. The first recorded appearance of his name is in 1508, in the archive of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke, in which he was registered as an illuminator and engraver. In 1523 Doesborch was apparently in England, as his name can be found as "Johanne van Dwysborow" in the Tax Records of the parish church of St Martin-in-the-Fields in London. That Doesborch had some ties to the English printing and bookselling trades is also evidenced by his printing of a handful of books in English and by his apparent ties to the London bookseller Laurence Andrewe. Scholars of the history of printing have also suggested that Doesborch's publications exerted a considerable influence on the English book market. R. Maslen for instance posits that: "If William Caxton and Wynkyn de Worde had a more obvious influence on a wider range of literary genres, van Doesborch and his translators—who included the Englishman Laurence Andrewe—may be said to have shaped the entire course of English prose fiction in the sixteenth century." Ben Parsons has likewise stated: "Van Doesborch may even be termed a literary dictator, as his publications set the tone of the English book market for a number of years."It is clear that Jan van Doesborch tried to print books for a contemporary market of interested readers. In numerous instances he compiled thematic books, in which he incorporated fragments of texts he had previously published: the books The nine drunkards, Der nine quaetsten, and That bedroch der vrouwen include overlapping materials, for instance. In the last two titles, he mixed stories from the Bible and the classical world with new translations from the famous Burgundian collection of short stories Les cent nouvelles nouvelles (ca. 1464 – 1467). Similarly, his books Of the newe landes, Die reyse van Lissebone, Van der nieuwer werelt, and the broadside De novo mondo incorporate the source material of Balthasar Sprenger's account of his participation in the Seventh Portuguese India Armada of 1505–06, a mercantile expedition from Lisbon to the eastern coast of Africa and India.Another notable aspect of the books printed by Doesborch is the abundance of woodcut illustrations that appear in them. For this reason, Doesborch's books are of some art-historical interest today. The primary typeface used by Doesborch for printing his books is similar or identical to that used by Jacobus de Breda, Henrik de Lettersnider, R. van den Dorpe, and Henrik Eckert in the fifteenth, and by almost every printer in the Netherlands in the sixteenth century. The Utrecht Buurkerk records state that he died (and was buried) there in 1536. wikipedia

William Caxton (c. 1422 – c. 1491) was an English merchant, diplomat and writer. He is thought to be the first person to introduce a printing press into England in 1476, and as a printer to be the first English retailer of printed books. His parentage and date of birth are not known for certain, but he may have been born between 1415 and 1424, perhaps in the Weald or wood land of Kent, perhaps in Hadlow or Tenterden. In 1438 he was apprenticed to Robert Large, a wealthy London silk mercer.Shortly after Large's death, Caxton moved to Bruges, Flanders, a wealthy cultured city in which he was settled by 1450. Successful in business, he became governor of the Company of Merchant Adventurers of London; on his business travels, he observed the new printing industry in Cologne, which led him to start a printing press in Bruges in collaboration with Colard Mansion. When Margaret of York, sister of Edward IV, married the Duke of Burgundy, they moved to Bruges and befriended Caxton. Margaret encouraged Caxton to complete his translation of the Recuyell of the Historyes of Troye, a collection of stories associated with Homer's Iliad, which he did in 1471.On his return to England, heavy demand for his translation prompted Caxton to set up a press at Westminster in 1476. Although the first book that he is known to have produced was an edition of Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, he went on to publish chivalric romances, classical works and English and Roman histories and to edit many others. He was the first to translate Aesop's Fables in 1484. Caxton was not an adequate translator, and under pressure to publish as much as possible as quickly as possible, he sometimes simply transferred French words into English; but because of the success of his translations, he is credited with helping to promote Chancery Standard (a London dialect of Middle English) that he used to the status of standard dialect throughout England. In 2002, Caxton was named among the 100 Greatest Britons in a BBC poll. wikipedia
